Every Aircraft in Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli Films
World-class anime director Hayao Miyazaki has been fascinated by flying machines all his life. This shows in his work, as his films are filled to the brim by all sorts of inventive airships, fast planes and gravity-defying floating castles.
In honor of the release of "The Boy and the Heron", I've compiled this video that shows off every unique type of aircraft in Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli films. Every plane, helicopter, airship, witches' broom and more.
If I did manage to miss anything, please let me know in the comments down below?
✅ Rules
-Everything that can allow a human to fly is included: from more normal aircraft, to massive flying fortresses and even magic talismans that allow you to fly.
-I'm limiting myself to the Studio Ghibli films that Hayao Miyazaki directed. While there are a few
-Princess Mononoke and The Boy and the Heron aren't featured in this film. Mononoke because it simply has no flying machines of any kind in it. And the Boy and the Heron, because it's not out on video-on-demand yet. Go watch it in theaters!
-Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is included, as it was made by the predecessor to Studio Ghibli.
-The Castle of Cagliostro was directed by Miyazaki, but was produced by a very different production company, so I'm leaving it out. It's a fun move though, so go and watch it as well!

48 FPS looks amazingly fluid and beautiful, and most importantly it looks real. 24 FPS is a slideshow that hurts my eyes. Everyone here who prefers 24 needs to quit whining and stop ruining movies for the rest of us. You only prefer it that way because you've been watching low framerate movies your entire life. Get used to watching high FPS video and you'll realize how painful 24 actually is.

Large animals would not move this fast, too see the improvement slow the video to 0.50x - 0.75X. Its shows the benefits of added frames.

  • @Cornermouse1

Doesn't work. Framerate is tied to the camera movements and other elements, giving everything a synthetic TV look. 2x or 4x smoothing, isolated to the stop motion, could work.

The fact that 60 fps sometimes feels like watching 3D-animation shows that 3D-animation sometimes could benefit from lower framerate and artistically jerkier movement.

interesting seeing the original orientation... being a nitpicker there are a lot of little improvements that could be made to give a more fleshed our design.. the angle of the saucer edge, the larger dome on the bottom. I understand you just reversed the footage but it would be kinda cool to see someone rebuild it in blender with all the little fixes.

Simply increasing the FPS doesn't magically produce extra frames to fill the new higher FPS if the total count of frames is still the same. It'll just look like it's sped up.

Very interesting experiment but To be fair, The choppier movement not only make them look more robotic but considering they all suppose to be kind of crappier compare to Robocop, the lack of fluidity in their movement make sense. Also for the larger robots like ED-209 and RoboCain, i think after you've smoothed the animation maybe you should play around and see if you could make them slower. I actually like seeing them more fluidly but they move wayv to fast it doesn't convey how heavy these machines are suppose to be!

One thing I do find funny about Harryhausen's career: despite how dismissive he was of suitmation (one of my few genuine quibbles with him, since I like and appreciate that as well as stop-motion), not only did he play a major part in inventing the kaiju genre with The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (inspiration for Godzilla), his very last monster, the Kraken from Clash of the Titans, is essentially a kaiju (massive size, coming from the sea, capable of destroying an entire city at a time, stated as being able to withstand an army and immune to conventional weapons that ultimately requires the use of an oddball, outlandish means to defeat it, etc.)

The thing I ALWAYS notice about the “upgrade” is that the frame rate is ALWAYS just a little too fast, and it’s too crisp. It doesn’t look like real life. Imho it should look exactly the same on screen as if I was standing there.

Sorry but I find these results poor. Aside from the model shots, most of the AI enhanced shots look inferior to the original SD in my opinion. I think the real problem is your original SD source which looks really low quality. Make sure you're using the highest quality 576p PAL DVDs and ripping them directly instead of adding another layer of compression, which is how this looks.
